Property tax: update notice for tax authorities in2024 - do I need it?

In July of last year, 34 million French property owners were required to fill out a new tax declaration regarding their real estate. Today, MoneyVox answers the questions of Poma, who is unsure about the necessity of completing this declaration for 2024. Poma's question was asked on November 17.

Will the famous property declaration need to be filled out again in 2024? Nothing has changed for me; we are still the owners of our primary residence. But I don't know if this declaration needs to be updated every year or not?

Hello!

You are referring to the mandatory declaration for all property owners, introduced in the spring of last year by the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) through the "Managing My Real Estate" service. This declaration was intended to accurately identify owners who continue to pay housing tax (for secondary residences, rental properties) or tax on vacant properties. The goal of the DGFiP was to ensure that the information held by the tax authorities regarding the owner's property situation was correct.

Owners were given until July 31, 2023, to complete the declaration; otherwise, they faced a fine of 150 euros for each unregistered property.

So, do you, Poma, need to fill it out again in 2024? If nothing has changed in your situation, don't worry: DGFiP reminds you that a new declaration is only required if there is a change in your situation. Therefore, you can declare your changes as they occur, as the service operates 365 days a year.

This may be necessary, for example, in the case of a move. If you remain the owner of your property and are moving, you need to indicate the new status of your property (secondary housing, rental...). In the case of a sale, the obligation to declare lies with the buyer, the new owner of the property.

However, for stubborn owners who still haven't declared their property despite the initial warnings from the tax authorities, it's better to hurry up. The first fines are likely to appear in January 2024.

Are you having trouble figuring out what needs to be declared? You can get help by calling 0809401401 (toll-free), Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, or you can go directly to the tax office or the nearest "France Service" office to access a computer for self-service and receive the necessary personal assistance.
