To determine the amount of sales tax you'll need to pay when buying a car, the experts at GOBankingRates analyzed each state's average sales tax. Assuming a car purchase price of $15,000, the experts were able to calculate the amount of sales tax paid.

Residents of five states pay no sales tax on the purchase of an automobile:

• Alaska
• Delaware
• Montana
• New Hampshire
• Oregon

Sales tax on sales over $1,000 is payable in nine states:

• Utah ($1,028)
• Minnesota ($1,032)
• Tennessee ($1,050)
• Rhode Island ($1,050).
