Tax rates when purchasing a car in each state.

There are a few states where the amount of sales tax you pay when buying a car can be as low as $0. In other states, this value can exceed $1,000. To determine the amount of sales tax you'll need to pay when buying a car, the experts at GOBankingRates analyzed each state's average sales tax. Assuming a car purchase price of $15,000, the experts were able to calculate the amount of sales tax paid.
Residents of five states pay no sales tax on the purchase of an automobile:
- Alaska
- Delaware
- Montana
- New Hampshire
- Oregon
Sales tax on sales over $1,000 is payable in nine states:
- Utah ($1,028)
- Minnesota ($1,032)
- Tennessee ($1,050)
- Rhode Island ($1,050).
- Indiana ($1,050)
- Georgia ($1,050)
- Illinois($1,088)
- California($1,088)
- Nevada ($1,238)
Listed in alphabetical order are the post-purchase car sales tax amounts in each state.
