A panorama of Madonna's global real estate holdings.
More than 30 years have passed since the release of Madonna's hit song "Material Girl," and now the singer has the real estate to back up her words. Over the past few decades, the Queen of Pop has amassed an impressive collection of homes located in London, Beverly Hills, New York, Lisbon and more. The singer makes each city she lives in a new center for her many projects. For example, a historic 18th century Moorish mansion in Portugal, which she purchased in 2017, became the site for daily dispatches during the pandemic. She recently bought an estate in Hidden Hills from The Weeknd, which is likely a sign of her return to Hollywood during the release of new music in 2022. Below, we've compiled a few''million dollars in November 2012 and sold it for an undisclosed amount a few months later.
1992
One of Madonna's earlier homes was an exquisite nine-bedroom Mediterranean Revival-style residence on Miami's exclusive Brickell Avenue that cost $4.9 million. Judging from photos from the ad, it was a stone home with long arborvitae walkways, swaying palm trees and a private dock. The singer sold her property for $7.5 million in 2000.
1999
When Madonna first started dating Guy Ricci in the late '90s, the couple lived in a two-bedroom one-bathroom apartment in South Kensington, London, which was reportedly already owned by the director. After getting married in the late''2000 they lived there for a few more years before selling in 2003. The duplex was a traditional stable house with living quarters on the second floor.
2001
From South Kensington, Madonna and Ricci moved to much larger quarters by purchasing the historic Ashcombe Mansion in Wiltshire, England, for about 9 million pounds, or about $12.23 million. Built in the 18th century, the estate includes a main brick building, a farmhouse, stables and an 18th-century Moorish greenhouse. According to Madonna in an interview with Vogue, she and Ricci "just fell in love [with the property]. In the summer, it's the most beautiful place in the world." As a result of the couple's divorce in 2008, the mansion was given to Ricci, and he still lives there today.
2003
After that, Madonna turned her attention back''on the United States by purchasing a luxurious French village-style estate in Beverly Hills that was the epitome of California style. She paid actress Cele Ward $12 million for the property, which included a premier eight-bedroom, 14-bath, 60-foot-long pool and two guest houses located on Sunset Boulevard. The music legend spent much of her career using the place as a base, but eventually sold it for $19.5 million in 2013.
2007
Madonna also continued to expand her real estate holdings in the U.K., purchasing a ten-bedroom townhouse owned by designer-developer Paul Davies for $8.07 million. According to the Evening Standard, it was her sixth''London house. At that time she probably already owned another family townhouse, two servants' houses, and two proprietorships which she had acquired for use by Kabbalah groups.
2008
As her marriage to Ricci broke up, Madonna bought another apartment at Harperley Hall on Manhattan's Upper West Side for $7.3 million. The apartment also had a neo-Italian style (double French doors, claw-foot tubs and Juliette-style balconies). The apartment caused the singer more trouble than it was worth after she got into several high-profile conflicts with neighbors. She's had it put up for' several times'sale, but couldn't get rid of it.
2009
The following spring, Madonna increased her holdings in New York by purchasing a new $40 million Georgian manor-style home on the Upper East Side. The home consists of three townhouses combined into one mega-home with 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, nine fireplaces, a wine cellar, an elevator and a 3,000-square-foot garden. The music legend still owns the home.
At the same time, Madonna has reportedly bought a horse farm in the Hamptons from photographer Kelly Klein, the ex-wife of designer Calvin Klein. The sale has not been made public, so it's unknown how much the singer paid Klein for this 30-acre stable, but in the following years''Madonna has purchased a neighboring estate, owning a total of 58 acres in the Hamptons. In June 2021, it was reported that the pop icon had found a new use for her sprawling estate: according to the New York Post, Madonna has chosen designer and builder Jeffrey Call to help build a recording studio on the property.
2017
After the 2016 U.S. election, Madonna made one of her most dramatic statements to date: she moved overseas with her family, allegedly paying $8.9 million for a four-bedroom, 18th-century Moorish Revival-style caboose located about 20 miles outside of Lisbon, Portugal. The music legend shared several snapshots from inside the luxurious interiors, where you can see the wooden floors,''Beige-colored walls and an elongated beamed ceiling. Madonna still owns the estate.
2020
Although Madonna and her children spent the first few months of the pandemic in Portugal, she eventually began renting a property in Beverly Hills that was built in the early 1940s by architect Paul Revere Williams for Bert Lahr (otherwise known as the lion in The Wizard of Oz). Over the years, popular Hollywood names including Betty Grable, Paul McCartney and the Osbourne family have lived in the estate, which features a two-lane bowling alley, game and billiards room, home theater and outdoor tennis court. And while the exact amount Madonna pays in rent is unknown, Variety estimates that the bill could be''bout $120,000 a month.
2021
As the second year of the pandemic approached, Madonna felt the urge to buyreal estate again and purchased a Hidden Hills estate from The Weeknd for $19.3 million. (The listing was held by Angel Salvador of The Beverly Hills Estates.) The house initially had a modern-farmhouse feel before The Weeknd purchased it (photos of the place after its renovation are not available), and it includes a 13,391-square-foot main house with seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, a gym, wine cellar, movie theater, bar, five-car garage and full basketball court. There's also a two-bedroom guest house, an infinity edge pool with an adjacent spa, and an outdoor living area. The Weeknd originally paid 18.2''million dollars for a new home in 2017.
