Cantor homes were established in 1839. They are part of the history of our beautiful country, as they are mostly located along Italy's historic state roads. At that time they were reserved for "cantoners", professionals who gradually disappeared after the last pensions. They were workers responsible for monitoring and maintaining roads and railroad crossings. In the days of big city expansions, this solution was designed for workers to conveniently manage home and work. They were called cantoneri because they managed sections of roads that the state divided into cantons, small sections no more than 3 to 4 kilometers long.

In the 1980s, as Italy was moving toward a free market and competition, as opposed to state social security, they were closed because of the excessive maintenance costs borne by the state railroads. Cantoner homes are fully habitable. Some are very spacious and located in upscale neighborhoods, but cost much less than on the open market.
