The Primate estate in France is being revived as a luxury resort

Garance Prima, daughter of French oil tycoon and billionaire Didier Prima, inherited a 2,100-acre holiday property in the Charente region of France from her father. Her first order of business was a complete renovation of the century-old buildings scattered throughout the grounds.

Last summer, after five years of careful renovation, the young successor opened Domaine des Etangs, a unique chateau-like retreat with a mix of antique and modern furniture, original stonework and wooden beams, and a collection of works by artists from Henri Matisse to Thomas Ruff.

Following perhaps in honor of his father, a passionate nature lover and founder of the Virginian resort Primland, Prima also offers to infuse adventure into the experience of staying at Domaine des Etangs, offering biking, boating, hiking, fishing, horseback riding and sailing on its vast country estate.

WHAT:

A historic castle transformed into a luxury resort with seven suites, seven cottages, a premium restaurant and a soon-to-open spa.

WHEREAS:

Located on 2,100 acres of Charente countryside, about 100 miles north of Bordeaux.

WHY:

Slender elegance meets proximity to nature. Domaine des Etangs, domainedesetangs.com ($650-$2,000).
