Chinese equity markets opened after a golden week last week and showed mixed performance following the horrific events in Israel over the weekend that drove oil prices higher.

There were several holidays in Asia overnight, including National Sports Day in Japan, Hangul Day in South Korea and Double Ten Day in Taiwan. Strong consumer demand figures during China's Golden Week indicate an increase in domestic tourism and tourism revenues. However, real estate sales have been weak, which can be attributed to the volatility of the mainland Chinese market. Foreign investors also sold $1.02 billion worth of shares.

At the same time, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and five senators traveled to China, where they met with President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Schumer's meeting with Xi is a strong signal.

The Hong Kong market opened up just two hours due to a typhoon, and despite rising slightly, failed to replicate Friday's gains. Chinese stocks, which have not traded since Thursday, also posted small losses. The energy sector has been the most successful in both mainland China and Hong Kong. Hong Kong shares were purchased by Chinese investors. Overall, Asian equity markets remain volatile, but the energy, materials and healthcare sectors continue to show gains.
