The Russian ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov has said that the decision to start providing consular services to Russian citizens living in Northern Cyprus has been "delayed". In an interview with the Cyprus News Agency, Murat Zyazikov spoke about the work to open a consulate in Northern Cyprus. He noted that the solution to the problem of providing consular assistance to Russian citizens living in Northern Cyprus and numbering more than 50,000 people has been delayed.
The main goal of opening the consulate is to ensure effective consular protection and access to assistance for Russian citizens, Murat Zyazikov emphasized, adding that this work will continue in the interests of Russia.
When asked whether Nicosia was informed at all stages, Ambassador Zyazikov said that consulate issues are central to the political dialog between Russia and Cyprus.
On direct flights between Russia and northern Cyprus, Ambassador Murat Zyazikov said that "from a humanitarian point of view, it would be fair to ensure the protection of the rights of Cypro-Russian and Cypro-mixed families living on the island so that they could maintain uninterrupted communication with their relatives." He also noted that the lack of direct flights between Russia and Cyprus has caused great losses for the tourist market, as stated by representatives of the accommodation sector. "Our Cypriot friends are expecting a mass return of Russian tourists, and we hope that this will definitely happen," Zyazikov concluded.
