A month after the new head of the national police department took office, Arnaud Garnier visited the police station in Lannion. He answered questions from Trégor.
What has your journey been like?
I am originally from this department. I am 46 years old. I joined the national police twenty years ago. I started my career in Calais for four years before moving to Oise and then to Réunion. I have worked in each of these last two departments twice in succession. I have been the head of the department since 2011.
60 police officers in Lannion
What are the responsibilities of a department head? We need to manage operations effectively, as well as oversee resources and real estate, even if we are not alone in this last aspect. There are 330 police officers in the department, including 60 in Lannion. Some unions are complaining about the lack of staff in Lannion... I don't know of a single union that hasn't called for more personnel. In this regard, they are not entirely wrong. We could double the number of staff in Lannion, just like everywhere else, and we would have plenty to do. The more of us there are, the better the quality of work, in a city where we provide training and prevention, and fully conduct criminal investigations, for example.
Drug trafficking
How do you assess the situation in Lannion? It's a city where we face moderate classic crime.

What are your priorities? A major issue that we closely monitor is violence against women. This is a topic that is dear to us. We comprehensively examine all situations. We try to delve into the circumstances to see if there is hidden violence beyond the conflict. We work with associations for social and psychological support. In this area, we are conducting more procedures, which sometimes lead to convictions. On the other hand, people are increasingly reporting these situations to us. In 2023, we are noting a slight decrease in such interventions, which may be a sign of the work done.
Does this require a greater presence on the ground?
Yes, this is another one of our priorities - ensuring the safety of daily life by being closer to the community. We will develop foot patrols to be more visible and accessible in crowded areas. Stay updated on all the news from your favorite cities and media by subscribing to Mon Actu.
