Prince finds hope in love and music in the rare artifact from the time of the Iraq War, United States of Division.
A rare "B-side" by Prince titled "United States of Division" has finally received an official wide release, appearing on streaming services today in honor of the 20th anniversary of the 2004 album Musicology.
This track, released as a "virtual b-side" to the song "Cinnamon Girl" from the album Musicology, is a funky protest anthem infused with the spirit of the Iraq War, where Prince analyzes international conflicts and violence, as well as internal strife and divisions, while trying to find hope in love, faith, and music.
Musicology will officially celebrate its 20th anniversary on April 20, 2024. This album was Prince's 28th studio album, and although he released a nearly constant stream of music throughout the 90s and early 2000s, Musicology was recognized as a return to his original style. It became both a critical and commercial success, standing out from many of its predecessors.
Prince even put aside his long-standing feud with the labels and allowed Columbia to distribute and help promote the album, refusing an advance but retaining full ownership of the album. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Prince said: "One of the advantages of having 'slave' written on my face was that when I meet with the label now, they already know they won't own anything. Maybe at one time, they could have gotten a little Richard or a chicken stock. But we don't do that anymore."
In addition to the release of "United States of Division," Prince's heirs shared a short video featuring an archival interview with Prince, as well as footage from his Musicology tour.
