A guide to Lucca: Italy's little-known fairytale city

  • Tenuta Di Tramonte - Belgian couple Lorenzo and Laurence decided to leave city life behind and move to the countryside among the hills of Lucca. Villa Trenta, one of two villas on the Tramonte estate, was built more than five centuries ago and''Has been owned by the Lorenzo family for four generations. It still shines with its antique splendor and is now available for rent with its own swimming pool (the villa sleeps 24 people). Villa Volpi, a former convent, was purchased just eight years ago with the intention of turning it into a family home. But after a thorough renovation, they decided to turn it into a B&B, with beautifully restored and original terrazzo floors, antique furniture and seven en-suite rooms with views of the hills. In 2024, the property will also have a chef on site to prepare bespoke lunches and dinners.
  • Grand Universe Hotel - The 55-room Grand Hotel is superbly located overlooking the city's two central squares, Piazza del Giglio and Piazza''Napoleon, just a short walk from restaurants, cafes and boutiques. The hotel has a rich history - it was formerly a glass workshop, then the palatial residence of an aristocratic family before becoming a modern hotel in the mid-18th century. Sleep in stylishly decorated rooms that have previously hosted a series of artists, poets and royalty from around the world. The rooms have furniture by local craftsmen and each room has a private bathroom with painted tiles. The best places to visit in Lucca, Tuscany

  • Villa Reale di Marlia - When Napoleon conquered Lucca in the 18th century, he appointed his sister Elisa Bonaparte Bacocci as its ruler. She chose Villa Reale di Marlia, a magnificent seventeenth-century estate, as her summer residence. The princess significantly improved the villa's gardens and architecture, transforming it into a brilliant example of neoclassical style inspired by the Parisian gardens of Versailles. In 2015, the villa underwent a restoration process to revitalize its splendor after a period of neglect, preserving its imperial-style interiors, ceiling frescoes and stunning bathrooms finished in Carrara marble. Take a stroll through the magnificent''Gardens and explore Teatro di Verzura, the oldest theater in Europe. In 2024, 11 new suites will open in the villa.
  • Villa Torrigiani di Camigliano - This villa is literally breathtaking. Walk through the perfectly trimmed gardens with two impressive rows of cypress trees (almost a kilometer long) and see the majestic villa with its impressive baroque facade. It has a history going back to the 16th century when it was built for the Buonvisi family, but in the late 17th century it was acquired by the Marquis Nicolao Santini, envoy of the Republic of Lucca to the court of Louis XIV at Versailles.   • Orto Botanico - Founded in 1820, Lucca's botanical gardens preserve two centuries of labor, research and conservation. It was Elisa Bonaparte who commissioned its creation. The princess had already expressed her passion for horticulture - the first species of plants donated to the botanical gardens were from Villa Reale di Marlia. Stroll along beautifully manicured paths lined with century-old trees such as gicco Biloba, pink and fuchsia-colored magnolias, exotic and native plants and a tranquil pond with lily pads and plants. Botanical enthusiasts can also visit the museum, which houses thousands of dried flowers and plants,''spanning two centuries, and there are several exciting activities and workshops available for the little ones on site.
  • Wine tasting at Tenuta di Valgiano - Laura di Collobiano and Moreno Petrini have owned this old house since the early 1990s and have dedicated the last 30 years to creating one of the best organic wine estates in the region. The estate's main building, a former aristocratic summer residence built in the 15th century, is the heart of the estate. Set at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the house is surrounded by 55 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, forests, wheat fields and apiaries. Four biodynamic wines are produced here: three reds and one white. Take a walk through the vineyards, visit the cellars and taste''great products in the company of small appetizers while enjoying stunning views of Lucca.
  • Atelier Ricci - Among the narrow cobbled streets of the historic city center is the spectacular Palazzo Orsetti-Cittadella-Mazzarosa. Inside is the prized Atelier Ricci, a tailoring atelier that epitomizes the distinction of Italian craftsmanship. The establishment dressed influential Italian personalities including Mina and Ornella Vanoni in the 1980s. Nowadays, her father's efforts continue to be meticulously led by Patrizia Ricci, continuing to work on this ancient and exquisite art. She has decided to open the doors of her atelier so that visitors can see and admire these extraordinary interiors decorated with silk, wool and precious''basket for only 5 euros per hour (25 euros per day).
