Rose Wines, Giving the Energy of Autumn
It's the first day of fall and I'm still drinking rosé! Don't tell me rosé wine is only for the summer months because that's wrong. With so many regions around the world producing rosé from different grape varieties, there is a good variety of styles, some of which are more structured and with a deeper expression of fruit nuances, perfect for fall. Here are a few options worth trying:
1. "De Coelo" 2022 Pinot Noir rosé from Benziger, Sonoma.
The wine, sourced from grapes grown just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, features aromas of tangerine and baked strawberry shortcake. Rich and thirst-quenching, it is the perfect wine for fall. Certified organic by Demeter from a pioneer in biodynamic farming.
2. "Bird in Hand" rosé made from 2022 Pinot Noir, South Australia.
Aromatic and spicy with notes of dried raspberry and green leaf. A radiant copper-salmon color, light and great with deli meats, green vegetables and roasted eggplant.
3. "Conde Valdemar" 2022 Rioja DOC.
Sweet young strawberries and a touch of tart lime, this is the wine made from Garnacha and Mazuelo. Good acidity in this medium-bodied rosé that pairs well with fall dishes. The beautiful floral label creates a pleasant atmosphere on the dinner table.
4. "Sylviane" 2022 from Ehlers Estate, Napa.
Aromas of dried flowers and herbs are dominated by spicy and earthy notes, ripe fruit with strawberry, caramel orange zest and a touch of menthol. A more structured style in a salmon pink bottle.
5. "Ferrari-Carano Dry Rosé 2022, Sonoma.
Blend based on Sangiovese with the addition of Pinot Noir and small amounts of Grenache, Black Muscat and Carignan. A very dry wine with black cherries and sour cranberries.
Five options for fall:
1. "Osmosis Rosé 2022 from Fincas Patagonicas, Mendoza.
This fresh wine from Argentina is bright salmon-colored and combines aromas of tangerine and lime. Produced from grapes grown in high-altitude vineyards using sustainable methods. At 85 calories per serving and no sugar.
2. "Leslie" a 2022 Pinot Noir rosé from Frank Family Vineyards, Carneros.
Anise aroma is replaced on the tongue by tart cranberry and raspberry flavors that blend beautifully with salty notes.
3. "The 2022 Radian Vineyard from Hawkbox, Santa Rita Hills.
This is a fun wine with sour red fruits such as watermelon and raspberry and earthy notes. It is unfiltered but not as extravagant as natural wine, but it has a nice unusual flavor. From Lang & winery;
4. "The Mill Keeper" 2022 Napa.
This wine honors the first mill keepers in the wine region and is composed of a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Grenache and the remaining portions of Malbec and Petit Syrah. The acidity is combined with berry notes of strawberry, cranberry and red currant and a delicate pastry finish.
5. "Oasis di Feudo Maccari Rosato, Sicily IGP.
A fun bottle for a party. A little creaminess infused with tarragon notes, this wine is more herbal and spicy than fruity. However, the flavor notes are focused on sour cherry and some tropical tones. Made from Nero d'Avola, one of Sicily's finest wines.
Five options for fall:
1. "Lot 366" a 2021 Grenache rosé from OG de Negoce, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara.
Vibrant notes of tangerine and spice in a medium-bodied wine. Great as an aperitif to delicacies or in combination with grilled wild salmon. Also from the same producer, the rosé "Lot 333" from Nerello Mascalese (Terre Sicilia IGT) with earthy notes, filling acidity and dark sour red fruits such as cranberry and rhubarb.
2. "Spicewood Vineyards' 2022 Sangiovese rosé, Texas Hill Country.
Tropical fruit punctuated by a field of strawberries. Slightly earthy, slightly creamy and medium-bodied, perfect for light dishes like turkey burgers or as an accompaniment to cheese crackers.
3. "Mirror Play" 2022 from Tank Garage Winery, Sierra Foothills.
Sour with notes of pink grapefruit, fresh and fun. A sexy label (many of their labels are inventive or provocative). A blend of almost equal parts Mourvèdre, Grenache and Senso.
4. "Calafuria" 2022 from Tormaresca, Puglia.
Cherry is present throughout the flavor profile of this darker southern Italian medium-bodied rosé made from Negroamaro, one of Puglia's key grape varieties. Strawberry and watermelon accompany the other red fruits, and the acidity is maintained from start to finish.
