Rudy Giuliani may remain in the condominium in Florida despite the judge's concerns about his spending habits.
Rudy Giuliani has managed to keep his apartment in Florida for now, as a bankruptcy judge in New York rejected creditors' motions to sell the property in Palm Beach. Judge Sean Lane acknowledged the "significant" concern that Giuliani is spending money on an apartment that belongs to his numerous creditors, but he declined to make a ruling on the sale of the property valued at approximately $3.5 million.
Giuliani declared bankruptcy in December after being ordered to pay $148 million to two former employees from Georgia for spreading falsehoods about their role in the 2020 elections. He agreed to put his Manhattan apartment up for sale for about $5 million, but claims he needs to continue living in his Florida apartment, citing the necessity of recording his podcast and "huge" expenses related to finding new housing in New York City.
The bankruptcy has attracted a variety of creditor coalitions claiming that Giuliani owes them money, including a supermarket worker who was jailed for shaking his hand, two election technology companies that he spread conspiracy theories about, a woman he forced into sex, several of his former lawyers, the IRS, and Hunter Biden, who claims that Giuliani illegally disclosed his personal information.
The attorney representing many of these creditors, Rachel Biblow Block, stated on Thursday that Giuliani spent at least $160,000 on utility bills and taxes for his Florida apartment after declaring bankruptcy, which is significantly more than the $8,000 monthly payments estimated by his lawyers earlier.
The judge hinted that more "draconian" measures could be taken if Giuliani fails to comply with the requirements to provide information about his expenses, including the possible appointment of a manager to oversee his finances. The next hearing is scheduled for May 14.
