The partners officially announced the new partnership during a ceremony at COP28 in Dubai. Masdar will acquire a 49 percent stake in the important renewable energy project, while RWE has retained a 51 percent stake and will be responsible for the development, construction and operation of the project throughout its lifecycle.
The planned DBS RWE
wind farm project.Consists of two wind farms, Dogger Bank South East and Dogger Bank South West (DBS East and DBS West), each with a capacity of 1.5 GW. They are located over 100 kilometers from the North Sea coast, in a place known as Dogger Bank. RWE has entered into a land use agreement for the DBS project with the Crown Estate in January 2023.
Masdar to join DBS at key stage of project development
C Construction could begin as early as 2025, with the first 800MW of electricity scheduled to come online in 2029 and the project scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2031.
"As one of the world's largest wind farms, the Dogger Bank South project will have a huge impact on reducing emissions and providing millions of UK families and businesses with clean, affordable and reliable energy," said Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar and President of COP28.
"We must triple renewable energy production and double energy efficiency by 2030 to achieve the Paris Agreement's target of warming limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius. As part of COP28, we aim to develop a unified program to deliver urgently needed planetary pathway adjustments, and projects including DBS are examples of how countries, companies and communities can come together to deliver powerful solutions. "
In September 2022, RWE and Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding to explore cooperation in wind energy both in Germany and beyond. Since 2008, Masdar has been a partner in the 630MW London Array project, which at launch was the world's largest offshore wind farm. Today's investment in the 3GW DBS projects is almost five times the size of London Array and becomes part of Masdar's plans to invest £11 billion in the UK renewable energy sector.
"We are delighted to welcome Masdar as our partner and co-investor in the Dogger Bank South project, which is RWE's largest offshore wind power development in the UK. With Masdar we have a strong and well-known partner who shares our ambition to further develop wind energy," said Markus Kreber, CEO of RWE.
