Most expensive housing markets in the U.S.: Cities with the highest median home prices.

Home prices may have peaked in the summer of 2022, but the most expensive residential markets in the U.S. are still incredibly expensive.

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller U.S. Index. National Home Price NSA has fallen 5.1% since last June. The 20-city index, which measures only the largest residential metro markets, fell nearly 7% over the same period.

However, both indexes are still up about 11% over the past three years, and experts are seeing increasing evidence that the latest home price downturn may already be coming to an end.

As a whole, the most expensive residential markets in the U.S. continue to be extremely expensive by historical standards. Nor should we expect them to get much cheaper anytime soon.

To determine what average landed home prices look like in the nation's most expensive residential markets, we turned to the latest data from the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). Their Cost of Living Index measures prices in 265 urban areas for housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, health care, and various goods and services (like going to the hairdresser or going to the movies).
