The next country to visit is Montenegro..

In Montenegro, there is a famous saying: "Good wine comes from a small barrel." We, the SiViaggia team, can confidently say that these words perfectly describe Montenegro. Despite being one of the smallest countries on our continent, Montenegro is a treasure trove of amazing and valuable natural and cultural attractions. Let's explore together all the reasons why Montenegro should be the next stop on your journey.

5 reasons to travel to Montenegro

Let's start by noting that five reasons is too few, as there are hundreds of reasons why everyone should visit Montenegro. However, we decided to list the most important and compelling reasons that we hope will inspire you to plan a trip to this European country.

The first reason

The incredible variety of opportunities and activities that Montenegro offers: you will be greeted by the delightful Adriatic Sea, mountains that seem to reach the sky with their peaks, hidden lakes sparkling in the sun, deep canyons concealed by forests, and plenty of nature for hiking, diving, rafting, cycling, horseback riding, and even winter sports. This is a country where the word "boredom" is practically absent, and where the sun shines much more often than in other places.

The second reason

It is connected to its sea. With its rugged coastline, there are beaches with all amenities, as well as hidden coves accessible only by boat. There are sandy beaches perfect for family vacations, as well as pebble and rocky beaches. But the most remarkable beach worth visiting is Becici Beach, which has been awarded the Golden Palm as the most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean. Additionally, there are islands, peninsulas, tourist ports, and bays. Overall, it is the perfect coastline for everyone.

The third reason

Montenegro will delight your taste buds. Balkan cuisine is wonderful, and in this country, you can try delicious meat and fish dishes. The tradition of fishing here is very old and widespread.

The fourth reason

It is connected to the artistic and cultural heritage that can be discovered in its picturesque cities and ancient villages. For example, Kotor is a natural and historical-cultural region that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. Herceg Novi (Castelnovo in Italian) is full of fortresses built by various local rulers and adorned with exotic plants brought by sailors from afar. Podgorica, the precious capital, is a modern city built on the banks of six rivers, giving it a truly stunning appearance. The last reason - but no less important - is the entertainment and hospitality. Montenegrins are people who love life, joke, and have fun. Days here flow with a rhythm of positive energy, and it is no coincidence that this is a country where the nightlife rivals many other places in the world. Additionally, throughout the year, numerous festivals, carnivals, and events dedicated to cuisine, crafts, and a multitude of local traditions are organized here.

The nature of Montenegro

Among the things that captivate visitors to Montenegro the most is its vibrant and stunning nature. It is enough to say that despite its small territory, there are four national parks located here. One of the wonders that should not be missed is Durmitor National Park, also known as the "region of small lakes": it is home to about twenty lakes formed by glacial origins. This majestic mountain massif is part of the Dinaric Alps and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980. Particularly remarkable is the amazing canyon formed by the Tara River, the deepest and longest in Europe. The Bay of Kotor is also beautiful, known as the "Bride of the Adriatic." Here, you can find many interesting coves washed by calm and clear seas, reflecting the colors of the surrounding high and wild mountains. One must also visit Lake Skadar, the largest in the Balkans and a true natural wonder.

Depending on the season, one can see a rich flora and fauna that attract eco-tourism enthusiasts and bird watchers. The numerous islands inhabited by people add special significance, among which the most famous is the island of Beška with its ancient and beautiful monastery.

Beaches worth visiting

In addition to the already mentioned Becici beach, Montenegro offers many other paradise spots. One of them is Trsteno beach, a sandy and pebbly stretch over 200 meters long, whose beauty seems stolen from the Caribbean islands. The Sveti Nikola beach is also very impressive, located on a picturesque little island opposite the port of Budva. With its tropical colors, it is called the "Hawaii beach" and is surrounded by some treasures, such as the Church of St. Nicholas. Another beach worth visiting is Przno beach, located in the village of the same name. It is about 100 meters long, and its sea is always calm and clear, always inviting for a swim. The golden sand and sparkling sea characterize Rafailovici beach, which is surrounded by lush vegetation. It is less frequented than many other beaches, making it perfect for those who want to relax and enjoy the sun. Last but not least, there are many dream beaches here - Milocer, also known as the "King's beach." This beach is reserved for hotel guests and has a crescent shape, covered with pink sand and pebbles, with magnificent vegetation.

Unique places

Cities full of wonders, vibrant nature, and postcard-like beaches, but the truth is that this is not all: Montenegro hides many places that are truly unique. One such place is the "island-church" of Our Lady of Škrpjela, where, according to legend, two brothers found an image of the Virgin Mary in 1452. For this reason, around the rock of discovery, you can see a series of stones that were used to create this artificial island, which is home to the beautiful Marian temple - the Church of Our Lady of Škrpjela. Another unique place is the "stećci," which, in addition to being a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2016, are part of a transnational site that includes 28 locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and central and southern Croatia. These are ancient cemeteries established between the 12th and 16th centuries, arranged in rows, with tombstones - the so-called "stećci" - carved from limestone and featuring a wide range of decorative motifs and inscriptions. Truly exceptional and unique is also the Biogradska Gora National Park, where shimmering lakes sparkle, turbulent rivers flow, and one of the last primeval forests in Europe has been preserved. It is one of the last three virgin forests that adorn our continent, and unlike the others, it offers the greatest diversity of flora and fauna. The charming Ostrog Monastery, built on a steep rocky cliff, is also surrounded by wilderness and has been a pilgrimage site for several centuries. Beautiful and worth visiting is also Perast; despite being a small village, it holds several records: it is the oldest settlement in the region, the sunniest place in the country, and one of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture along the entire Adriatic coast.

An important event of this year

In this beautiful country, the first sea-ski cable car on the Adriatic has just opened. This thrilling route is 3.9 kilometers long and directly connects Boka Kotorska with the national park of Lovćen at an altitude of 1,348 meters. The structure was built by the Italian company Leitner and is one of the few such connections in Europe. This exciting journey, which takes about 11 minutes, starts from Duba in the coastal town of Kotor and ends at Kuka on Mount Lovćen. With a difference of 1,316 meters between the departure and arrival stations, it has a capacity of 1,200 passengers per hour and consists of 48 cabins, each capable of accommodating up to ten people. Thanks to this incredible structure, in addition to significantly reducing travel time from one area to another, greater protection of the fragile environment is ensured, as it reduces...
