Tina Turner's death:60-minute interview with Mike Wallace at her home in France goes viral: I deserve more

Music icon Tina Turner passed away at the age of83 after a long illness. While fans remembered the fierce "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", many began sharing excerpts from her1997 interview with Mike Wallace for the CBS News program "60 Minutes".

In the interview, Turner shows Wallace his property in the south of France. She had been living in Europe for over ten years. Surveying the vast estates with stunning views, Wallace asked Turner, "Do you feel like you deserve all of this?" "I deserve more," Turner replied with a laugh.

That exchange of words went viral - 25 years after she confidently proved her worth. At the time, she was expected to earn $100 million for a three-month European tour. Wallace admitted he didn't realize Turner was so popular in Europe. "Nobody in America knows that," Turner replied.

When Wallace asked how "American" she was, Turner, who grew up in rural Tennessee, said: "I'm still very American. I still don't speak foreign languages here. I still pay taxes in America. I have property in America.

All my businesses are still run from there," she said. "But in my heart? I don't think I'm going back home."

In her retirement, Turner had settled in Zurich, Switzerland, and was there when she died this week, her spokesman said.

During a 1997 interview, Turner showed Wallace other elements of her lavish life - a customized Lamborghini and a private jet used for touring, as well as her Buddhist altar. Turner, who was born into a Baptist family, said she turned to Buddhism to overcome difficult times.

The eight-time Grammy Award winner had a musical career that spanned decades, beginning when she was discovered by Ike Turner, whom she married and who physically abused her. The relationship and abuse was detailed in her autobiography "I, Tina" and in the 1993 movie "What Is Love?" starring Angela Bassett.

Turner said she doesn't regret that the movie made her relationship problems public, but she does regret that "it wasn't pretty for her and that people found out about it." "I'm constantly reminded. It's been almost 20 years and Ike has been married twice," she said in an interview.

She also said she had to have an adjustment after her "face was disfigured" and she had problems with her maxillary sinuses due to a damaged nose from the abuse. Ike Turner died in 2007.

During the interview, Turner also introduced Wallace to her long-term partner, music producer Erwin Bach. Turner said they didn't see fit to get married at the time. The couple finally married in 2013 after 27 years together and remained together until her death.
