The Prime Minister of Portugal will meet with parliament regarding a family-owned real estate company.

Lisbon - The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, confirmed that he feels "very calm" about the situation regarding the family real estate business and has once again sent all clarifications to parliament for discussion of the no-confidence vote. "I have already had the opportunity to express myself on this matter; the no-confidence vote concerning this topic is being discussed, and I will provide all my explanations in parliament," he said in response to journalists' questions at the Portuguese embassy in Brasília on Wednesday.

“I am calm, I will take all measures according to my duty, fully confident that I have always adhered to my principles.”honesty, toleranceandrespect“to each one,” added Luís Montenegro. The Prime Minister also expressed confidence that the parliamentarians and the entire country would understand the essence of the matter “at first glance and right in front of me.”

When asked if he regretted not providing clarification right away, the prime minister repeated, "I will provide all the clarifications that are required of me in parliament next Friday, just as I had the opportunity to do the first time I was asked about this." Journalists were curious whether it was in Portugal's interest to clarify what exactly is happening with the company in which he was once a partner and which is now owned by his wife and children.

Luís Montenegro reiterated: "I have already raised this issue and I will say it again, don't get me wrong, I can repeat this many times. Next week I will be in parliament and I will provide the representatives of the Portuguese people with all the necessary clarifications on this matter, as well as on issues of governing the country, which is my duty."

The Prime Minister claims that he has never shied away from providing explanations and, when asked why he remained silent not only on this matter but also on other issues, he replied: "I work every day for the improvement of the quality of life of the Portuguese people, for their future." Then, addressing the journalist who asked the question, he added: "These questions are often not that important to the Portuguese men and women sitting at the table at home."

“So I have to be able to combine all of this, and I try to do it with balance.

I think the Portuguese understand me, honestly. I’m not saying it’s illegitimate to ask all these questions. I have never shied away from answering any questions, and that’s exactly what I will continue to do,” he added.

Arrived in Brazil on Tuesday to participate in the 14th Luso-Brazilian Summit, the Prime Minister left a message on social media platform X, emphasizing that he does not plan to discuss the "current internal political situation" during his visit, which will conclude on Thursday in São Paulo.

“Out of respect for the Portuguese representation at the important summit we are about to hold, and for the Portuguese parliament, I am redirecting all necessary discussions regarding the current internal political situation to the debates on the vote of no confidence, which will take place after my return to the country,” he explained.

The newspaper Correio da Manhã reported on Saturday that the company Montenegro Spinumviva "may benefit from changes to land legislation approved by the government," and since the Prime Minister "is married to the company's main partner," this puts him in a "potential conflict of interest." In response to the publication, the Prime Minister emphasized that there is no conflict of interest, noting that since June 30, 2022, he has not been a partner in the company he founded and managed, and that "no real estate transaction related to the changes in the land law has ever been, is not, and will not be part of the company's activities."

On Sunday, the leader of the Chega party, André Ventura, threatened to bring a vote of no confidence against the PSD/CDS-PP government if the prime minister did not provide explanations regarding this matter, which had not been given at that time. The vote has been submitted, and the discussion and voting will take place on Friday.

On Monday, André Ventura added that the company in question is based in Luís Montenegro's house in Espinho and called on the country's president to pay attention to the political conditions of the prime minister that allow him to remain in office.

Despite distancing himself from the issue of the vote of no confidence, the general secretary of the opposition Socialist Party, PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, noted that this case is "very similar" to the one that led to the resignation of assistant minister Ernani Dias, urging Luís Montenegro to provide explanations "as soon as possible."
