Top10 Best Resorts in Italy Chosen by Travel + Leisure Readers

More than4,700 miles of coastline and1,000 lakes adorn the Italian peninsula, like an exquisite print on a Dolce & Gabbana boot. Add in hundreds of islands that accessorize its shores, and it's no wonder that Italian coastal resorts have once again won the hearts of T+L readers this year in the "Best Places in the World" survey. Imagine this: you're sitting on a lounge chair with an Aperol spritz and some crispy, salty potato chips and olives, letting the sun warm your skin, preparing for a refreshing dip. You're in no rush; you'll probably splash around a bit, then sun dry yourself in time to enjoy a dinner of pasta and seafood with a view of the very place. Yes, the Italian resort vibes are truly unparalleled.

How does the voting process work?

Every year as part of our "Best Places in the World" survey, T+L asks readers to share their travel experiences around the world - to share their opinions on the best hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spa resorts, airlines, and much more. In the2023 survey, nearly165,000 T+L readers participated, which is25 percent more than before the pandemic. In total, over685,000 votes were cast for more than8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise ships, etc.).

Hotels were classified as resort hotels, city hotels, or safari lodges based on their location and amenities, specifically based on the following criteria: rooms/facilities, location, service, food, price. For each of these criteria, respondents could choose an excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor rating. The final scores are the average values of these responses.

What readers liked

This year, the list of favorite Italian resorts among T+L readers was dominated by properties on Lake Como, which took five out of ten spots, all featuring swimming pools right on the lake. Following closely is the Amalfi Coast, home to three of the top resorts, as well as the winner in the Sorrento category. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in Montalcino, Tuscany, was the only non-resort property to make the list, just like last year, but it dropped from first to fourth place. However, one reader strongly disagreed, stating that the 5,000-acre estate "remains the best hotel in the world," although it was replaced by the previous winner from 2021, Il Sereno. The complete list:

  • Il Sereno Lake Como:Torno, Italy.
  • Hotel Santa Caterina:Amalfi, Italy.
  • Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni:Bellagio, Italy.
  • Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco:Montalcino, Italy.
  • The San Pietro of Positano:Positano, Italy.
  • Villa d'Este:Cernobbio, Italy.
  • Grand Hotel Tremezzo:Tremecina, Italy.
  • Le Sirenuse:Positano, Italy.
  • Mandarin Oriental, Lake Como:Blevio, Italy.
  • Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria:Sorrento, Italy.
