In statistics and data collection, African Americans are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than whites. This became apparent after the case of George Floyd, an African-American man of 46 years old, killed by police officer Derek Chovin in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25. It sparked violent protests across the United States and in many countries around the world for one week.

For example, the number of African Americans in the United States is only about 13%, but the chance of blacks being killed by police is 2.5 times that of whites. This is an unreasonable ratio considering that there is a much larger white population. According to the data, for every million African Americans in the U.S., an average of 6.6 people are victimized by police, compared to 3.8 for Hispanics and 2.5 for whites.
  • Of the African Americans killed by police, however, 67.1% had a gun, 17.3% did not have a gun, 7.8% were unidentified, and 7.7% were in a vehicle.
  • The data also indicate that 44.9% of assaults on''police were retaliated against, 32.7% remain unknown and 18.9% change to other categories such as escape and safe custody.
  • Most importantly, 99% of police killings are not prosecuted or legally reviewed by a court.
  • In the last 7 years, 1,945 African Americans have been killed by police in the United States. The most dangerous states for African Americans from 2013-2019 were California with 186, Florida with 169, Texas with 157, Georgia with 98 and Illinois with 96. It is noted that in Minneapolis, where the George Floyd murder occurred, 17 African Americans were killed by police.
