But these photos show that the Balkan country also has a charm of its own. And it's no secret that the country has magical beaches - among the images are some little-known gorgeous sandy beaches on the Black Sea coast. Here's a look at the majestic Belogradchik Fortress (also known as "Kaleto"), an ancient fortress in the northwestern corner of the country.

This corner of paradise is Bolata Beach, a sandy paradise that is part of the Kaliakra Nature Reserve on the northeastern coast of the Black Sea. Birdwatching is excellent here, as well as dolphin sightings off the coast.

This gorgeous aerial photo shows the emerald waters of Sozopol, a historic resort town on the Black Sea coast founded in the 7th century BC. Take a look at a café on the coast of Sozopol. Despite its picturesque nature, there are some dark corners in the history of this town. In 2012, medieval skeletons were found in Sozopol with metal pegs hammered into their chests, presumably to prevent them from turning into vampires.

You could easily mistake this idyllic place for the south of France, but it is actually a lavender field in the Rose Valley in central Bulgaria. As the name suggests, this area is known for its colorful rose plantations - every summer, the Rose Festival takes place here, during which locals dress in traditional costumes and celebrate the rose harvest.

This dark and mysterious photo shows the "Devil's Throat" cave near the village of Gyovren in southern Bulgaria. "The entrance to the cave resembles the head of the devil, and a huge waterfall cascades down its throat, captivating the imagination and giving rise to many legends since ancient times," notes the tourist office, adding: "The most popular of these states that Orpheus [a character from Greek mythology] descended through this entrance into the underworld of Hades [the Greek god of the dead] to find his lost love Eurydice."
