Charles de Gaulle's 1945 villa on the French Riviera is worth $30 million.
The historic home of former French president Charles de Gaulle on the French Riviera has hit the market for $30 million.
Located in Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the Côte d'Azur between Nice and Monaco, this nine-room mansion was the home of de Gaulle - military officer, prime minister and president of France - in 1945, according to real estateagency Douglas Elliman, which put the property on the market in September.
"He even wrote his speech about the liberation of Nice here," said agent Andrea Wol Lucas.
In World War II, de Gaulle led Free French forces against Nazi Germany and presided over the provisional government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 to restore democracy in France. He was appointed prime minister in 1958 and president in 1959. He died in November 1970 at the age of 79.
Besides its history and famous former resident, the home is unusually large compared to neighboring homes and has beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.
"Most homes in the neighborhood are 4,000 to 5,000 square feet with four or five bedrooms. This home has over 10,000 square feet with nine bedrooms and additional staff rooms," said Wol Lucas.
Nothing remains of de Gaulle's time as the estate has been completely renovated. The owner, who could not be identified, "did the initial renovation in 2011 and then further renovated it in 2018," Vol Lucas said.
The three-story estate now encompasses 11,000 square feet of "absolute modernity," according to the ad. There are spacious living areas, two modern kitchens, a dining room, many terraces and an elevator. The master bedroom, meanwhile, "has spectacular sea and mountain views," Vol Lucas said. "It's 900 square feet and has two locker rooms and a huge bathroom. "
The backyard pool is surrounded by more than an acre of green gardens, and next to the main building there is maid's quarters and several studios for guests or household staff.
