Inside 20 luxurious filming locations for the new HBO series The Age of Gold
Why should only Brits get all the fun? "Downton Abbey" author Julian Fellowes moved to the U.S. last year with the HBO series "The Age of Splendor," which tells the story of high society in New York City in the 1880s, during the heyday of the industry.
The series tells the story of the tensions between members of the old money and the new rich who threaten the established social order. In real life, families like the Vanderbilts and Carnegies left their mark in Newport, Rhode Island, in the form of their famously rambunctious and enormous "summer cottages." Of course, this creates the perfect opportunity to create an impressive décor.
Before the second season of the TV series "Age of Splendor" hits theaters on October 29, we take you on a tour of 20 gorgeous estates on the East Coast of the United States. From historic house museums to overly luxurious mansions, take a look inside these architectural masterpieces that have stood the test of time.
The Great Hall and Breakers Music Room
One of the main attractions, the Great Hall and Breakers Music Room was used in the series as Bertha Russell's ballroom and George Russell's bedroom and pool room. These so-called "Dollar Princesses" and their families lived in Manhattan and spent summers in Newport, Rhode Island.

This huge Breakers mansion is one of four so-called "summer cottages" (read: castles) that were built just a few blocks apart during the building boom between 1892 and 1902. The mansion was designed by Richard Morris Hunt in the Renaissance Revival style and is a striking symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial superiority during the Age of Splendor. It is considered the most magnificent of all the mansions, with ornate ballrooms, extensive art collections, manicured gardens and the latest in (at the time) modern technology, including electric lighting. The mansion has 70 rooms, uses marbles imported from Italy and Africa, and a fireplace from a library bought from a French château. In the series, the Great Hall and the Breakers' neo-Renaissance Music Room are used as Bertha Russell's (played by Carrie Coon) ballroom and George Russell's (played by Morgan Spector) billiard room.
