Rising Asia.
According to data released by the national statistics agency, South Korea has reached a new negative record in its birth rate in 2023. The average number of births to a South Korean woman in her reproductive age fell to 0.72, down from 0.78 in 2022.
With a limited number of working people supporting a growing number of elderly people, South Korea is facing an economic crisis. The country's leaders have been trying to reverse this trend for years, but so far the measures taken to boost the birth rate have been unsuccessful.
Japan also recorded its lowest number of births ever in 2023, down 5.1 percent from the previous year, and Taiwan's birth rate has been declining for more than a decade.
In all three countries, out-of-wedlock births are rare and immigration rates are very low.
