According to historical sources, the presumed dating of the castle occurred in the era following the acquisition of the fiefdom of Isola by the Spinola family in 1256; previously it had been a possession of the Malaspina family since 1235. The probable dating could therefore be attested to the second half of the 13th century.
With the advent of the First French Empire in 1797 and of the Ligurian Republic (1805), and the consequent abolition of the imperial fiefs, the castle-palace lost any purpose related to defense and was sold during 1819 by the last Spinola heirs to the local families Denegri and Zuccarino. The latter, in subsequent structural interventions, transformed the ancient thirteenth-century residence into private homes, with the sole exception of the southernmost area, including the seventeenth-century loggia, which was instead purchased by the island’s municipal body. The collaboration between the higher state bodies (Liguria Region and the Province of Genoa) and the municipality itself then allowed its recovery through interventions of consolidation of the walls, foundations, internal hoops and the insertion of a truss roof made up of steel tie rods and wooden beams. A further agreement between the municipalities of Isola del Cantone and Savignone, linked to the regional project ”Terre di Castelli”, then sanctioned in 2013 the opening on two floors of the structure of the new archaeological museum of the Alta Valle Scrivia in which they are kept finds dating back to a time span between prehistory, the Neolithic, the medieval and feudal era and the centuries immediately preceding the 20th century.
