The territory of present-day Bodrum was colonized by people in ancient times. It was the site of the famous Halicarnassus, the second metropolis of the ancient Greek state of Caria. After his death, the metropolis fell into the hands of invaders and fell into decay. In the Middle Ages, the town is rebuilt by Maltese paladins of the Order of St. John.
