I spent about ten months in a dormitory, after which my family and I managed to rent an apartment from a housing cooperative in the city of Ansbach. At the moment, we do not plan to purchase property, as the prices for one-bedroom apartments in Nuremberg, which is considered one of the major cities in Germany, range from 80,000 to 100,000 euros.

The process of renting housing

The process of renting a home can turn out to be a real challenge. Renting an apartment from private landlords becomes a difficult task. It is necessary to visit numerous addresses and check out various offers, while the competition among applicants is very high. Foreigners, especially those receiving social benefits, face significantly lower chances of success.

In addition to arranging the rental, it is necessary to gather and fill out a lot of documents confirming the possibility of receiving government assistance. All this paperwork takes a lot of time. For example, if I need to move to another city, the process can take about a month, which is extremely inconvenient, as the landlord is unlikely to be pleased with such a long wait. A more acceptable option is to have a job or be in school: this will allow me to find an apartment more quickly and cover the rent on my own.

Our apartment in Ansbach

In our rented apartment, only my mom is registered, while I am still officially listed as living in a dormitory, even though I actually live with her. Ansbach is a small town with a population of only 40,000, and our apartment is not in the very center. The road near our house is in terrible condition — probably the only stretch of bad road in the country.

Nevertheless, the area where we live is green and quiet; however, the walls in the house are quite thin, so we sometimes hear our neighbors. Previously, our building was used as a student dormitory. There is a supermarket and a bus stop in close proximity to the house.

Living conditions

Our apartment is small, but it has been renovated to a high standard and features a modern built-in kitchen. Each resident of our building has a separate storage space in the basement for items like bicycles and suitcases. The area of our apartment is about 20 square meters, and it is a studio with the kitchen located in the same room. The rent costs us 296 euros per month. From this amount:

  • 171 eurosis going for rent;
  • 50 euros— for utilities (including cleaning and garbage disposal);
  • 40 euros— for heating;
  • 35 euros— for electricity.

At the end of the year, there is a recalculation of water and heating expenses, and sometimes residents have to pay an additional 400-500 euros, depending on the meter readings. Water and heating meters require attention to avoid complicated financial situations. We also paid a deposit of 510 euros, which will be refunded if we decide to move.

Comfort of living in an apartment

In any case, living in an apartment is significantly more comfortable than in a refugee dormitory. We have our own toilet, shower, and kitchen, which makes everyday life cozier. Despite the fact that the neighbors from Syria, Ukraine, and Africa are quite simple, they are generally friendly, and this is an important aspect of life in our home.

Studying in Germany: freedom and an individual approach

Studying in Germany is noticeably different from many other countries due to the opportunity for students to demonstrate greater independence, as well as the fact that the class schedule is tailored to the individual needs of the students. Currently, I am studying at the Faculty of Law at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, which is located in the beautiful city of Erlangen. My educational path in this field is designed for five years, during which I plan to obtain my first state exam, and then another two years will be spent preparing for the second exam. So far, I am facing a lot of written assignments and tests, the results of which, unfortunately, leave much to be desired.

I partially finance my studies with a scholarship, but it's important to understand that after graduation, I will need to repay a large portion of the funds received. The repayment conditions are interest-free! For example, I know a girl whose parents run a successful business; she decided to take out a loan from the bank for her education since she couldn't get Bafög.

The attitude of teachers towards students

At the university, teachers show respect for their students. If there is a need to go to the restroom, make an urgent call, or leave a lecture early, it is considered normal, and there is no need to ask for permission or feel awkward. Compared to the stricter rules that may exist in schools, the atmosphere at the university is much more comfortable.

Lectures and practical classes

Lectures, similar to those held at Russian universities, can sometimes seem boring — it's hard to keep attention on a single lecturer for an hour and a half. However, at our faculty, there is no strict requirement for mandatory attendance at all lectures, and each student has the opportunity to choose which classes interest them the most. Practical classes are usually conducted not only by professors but also by graduate students or young teachers. Nevertheless, despite this, the educational process is of a high standard and features a rich curriculum, which contributes to a thorough understanding of the material.

Creating a schedule

An important aspect of student life is the ability to independently create one's schedule. Students need to clearly determine which subjects to study in the current semester, choose suitable times for practical classes, and decide which instructors they will work with.

The process of registering for practical classes can be quite complicated, as the most convenient hours for learning may already be taken by other students, resulting in the need to look for alternative schedule options. For example, it might turn out that your first lecture starts at 10:00, and the next one is only at 16:00, and although the whole day will be occupied, such a schedule is not always optimal and practical.

Preparation for exams

Preparing for exams also requires participation in a special registration process, which begins several months before the test dates. Depending on the field of study, exams may be conducted in written form, and often it is unknown who will be grading the students' work.

The learning process becomes more productive thanks to the platform where teachers upload their presentations and lecture notes, allowing students to study the material independently in case of illness or other circumstances. Such educational materials and resources are extremely helpful for preparation.

Conditions in the library

The student library is equipped with a variety of modern textbooks and educational literature, as well as computers with internet access. It is a very bright and comfortable place for studying, but during exam periods, it can be difficult to find a free spot.

On the second floor of the library, there is a cafeteria where you can grab a quick bite for between 3 to 4 euros, offering large portions of meat dishes. All the necessary conditions for comfortable learning have been created in the educational process.

Characteristic traits of Germans

Germans as a nation possess many positive traits. People here are very polite, no one pushes or shoves, and everyone is ready to lend a helping hand. However, they are quite reserved by nature, respect personal space, and value the tranquility of those around them — this is an important part of their culture.

They prefer not to ask personal questions, thereby demonstrating tolerance and political correctness, which makes them exceptionally polite and hardworking.

Germans value organization; discussing problems and finding solutions are wonderful qualities. However, many of them find it difficult to form close relationships because they rarely initiate communication.

Personal opinion

I often receive compliments that I look like a German, until I start speaking. In everyday life, I rarely communicate in German, as most of my acquaintances prefer to speak Russian. Perhaps it is my cheerful and easygoing manner of communication that would have allowed Germans to create such a well-organized and prosperous state.

Personal relationships in Germany

In Germany, same-sex couples exist, but personal life matters are discussed quite discreetly here. The topics of such relationships are not something public; their private life remains solely their business. I myself have never encountered anything inappropriate or vulgar in this country.

For example, German girls often opt for light makeup and simple yet stylish clothing, avoiding excessive "fanciness." Modern German films aimed at a wide audience look much more decent compared to their Russian counterparts.

The country provides support for citizens with disabilities by offering adequate pension payments that help them lead a dignified life. In government institutions, there are often no thresholds, and access to buildings is organized with the help of elevators, as is the case, for example, at my university and train stations.

Accessible environment

When it comes to an accessible environment, you can experience a sense of freedom here that is much more comfortable than in Russia. You can sit on the floor if it's convenient, not be afraid to blow your nose, or eat homemade food in public places. Clothing can be as comfortable as you like: you can come to classes or the library in comfortable clothes and even in socks, which doesn't provoke a negative reaction, and I, for example, do this regularly.

Public transportation system

The public transportation system also has its nuances: trains are often delayed, and the cost of flights to Russia is quite high. Every city in Germany has a train station, and many locals prefer to commute to work using suburban trains. Cars and bicycles are popular among the population, while you can often encounter migrants on trains and subways.

My university is located quite far from home, and for this reason, it takes me about an hour and a half to get there one way. One of the main problems is the constant train delays. The railways don't always provide enough routes, which leads to disruptions in the schedule. If one train is late, it can cause delays for the next one. Often, when I use the trains, I lose a lot of time because of such situations.

Prices for travel passes

  • The prices for transit passes remain high, but there are some discounts available for students.
  • Every six months, I pay a student fee, which is approximately€110while education itself offers free opportunities.
  • When choosing a specialty, there are restrictions based on both the average score of the diploma and the results of entrance exams; the requirements are particularly strict for future doctors.
  • However, there are fields of study for which these criteria do not exist.

Semester fee

The main part of the semester fee (semesterbeitrag) consists of the cost of the basic travel ticket (semesterticket), which averages around€40It is used for the needs of the student community, which organizes affordable meals in educational institutions. Finding tickets for flights to Moscow is relatively quick, but flights to St. Petersburg are significantly more difficult to come by, as they operate much less frequently. Additionally, the cost of airline tickets on the route between Germany and Russia ranges from eighty to one hundred twenty euros round trip, which seems quite expensive. However, Ukrainians have it easier: flights to Kyiv are considerably cheaper and take much less time.

Personally, I believe that Russian medicine is on par with German medicine; however, the technical maintenance in Germany is often newer and more expensive. I noticed that here, doctors tend to favor non-medication treatment methods, encouraging patients to engage in physical activities such as cycling or swimming, as well as recommending therapeutic massages and physiotherapy.

In one of the clinics I visited, there was even a gym where patients could go with referrals and work out for a very reasonable price.

Case of injury

Once, when I seriously twisted my ankle, I had to wait about three hours for my appointment. The doctor provided me with crutches and a bandage completely free of charge. I also received a prescription for blood-thinning injections, which were given to me at the pharmacy without any additional costs.

I could have given these injections myself using automatic syringes.

Quality of life in Germany

Summarizing the year, one can confidently say that Germany is a country with a high standard of living. The government actively cares for its citizens, and the environment delights with its cleanliness and beautiful design, although locals note that the situation was even better ten years ago.

However, it should not be forgotten that this is still a foreign country for me, and the wealth I observe is the result of the hard work of the local people.
