Until today, historians do not know who of them can be considered the creators of the settlement. It is believed that the settlements here were built by the Carians and Lelegians 3 thousand years BC. They moved there from the central regions of Anatolia, building a city-colony Neopolis. In the VII century BC, the town falls under the rule of the Lydians. That's when it gets a new name - Sardes. After the collapse of the Roman state, it fell to Byzantium. At all times the main rival of the ancient Neopolis was Ephesus. Later, when several powerful earthquakes almost destroy it, Neopolis comes first. It is it that the Byzantines choose as their founding center of maritime commerce.
Around the fifteenth century, the town was given a new nickname ("New Staircase") by local merchants. In the Middle Ages it was transformed into one of the major ports of the region.
