The Prince's Islands - paradise island life available to everyone.
Brief historical background
What are the Prince's Islands?
It is a group of nine islands located in the Sea of Marmara. The archipelago is located in the north of Turkey and is one of the districts of Istanbul, more precisely about 25 kilometers from the city center. Throughout the world they are called by the name of Prince Islands or Princes Islands (Prens Adaları).
The history of this name is somewhat sad. The fact is that the islands have been used as prisons for nobles since the Byzantine Empire. Here were exiled unwanted disgraced nobles, princes and princesses. In 1453 Constantinople was conquered by the Ottomans, then one of the admirals of Mehmet the Conqueror captured the archipelago. The Ottoman Empire continued the tradition of exiling unwanted sultans to the islands.
The islands have many names, during Ottoman times they were called Kizil Adaları (Red Islands). Later, when the Greek Patriarchate temporarily held the rights to the islands, the islands had other names: Holy Islands (Evliya adaları), Divided Islands (Kesiş adaları), Soul Islands (Ruh adaları), Community Islands (Halka adaları). They are now called simply “islands” - Adalar.
Each of the islands has its own name. Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada, Kınalıada, Sedefadasi, Kaşıkadası, Yassıada, Sivriada, Tavşanadası. The last 4 islands are uninhabited, with Sedefadası half inaccessible, Kaşıkadası and Yassıada are private properties, and two more - Sivriada and Tavşanadası - completely uninhabited.
Ferries between the islands and Istanbul began running in 1846
