Police profession in Turkey

Police profession in Turkey

Almost every third ordinary police officer is now considering leaving the service due to low earnings. In addition, more and more former police officers are looking for jobs abroad, especially in a hospitable country like Turkey.

Police profession in Turkey

There are many reasons for this: large salary, opportunities for career growth, responsibilities of the position in the law enforcement structure, without shifting all the "black" work to patrolmen and ordinary employees. So how to find a good profession in Turkey, the police sphere? What are their pros and cons, how do Turkish police officers differ from other countries?

The importance and role of police officers in society

The police are an extremely important component of every country. Police officers and other members of the law enforcement agencies are responsible for ensuring order in public places, enforcing the criminal and administrative code, the Constitution, the laws of the state, apprehending criminals and taking them into custody. The profession is inextricably linked to danger, but law enforcement officers still perform it with honor and pride.

This is why there are so many in-demand jobs in the field of citizen security, without them Turkey would have long ago turned from a prosperous state into a hotbed of crime.

What is the appeal of being a police officer in Turkey

It can be much more profitable to work in a police department or station in Ankara than, for example, in Minsk, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg or even Moscow. There are several reasons for this:

  • A large pension fund, with additional payments for length of service and from all sorts of awards;

  • good health insurance;

  • opportunity for rapid career growth, access to professional development courses;

  • probationary period is rare, most often full-time employment is taken immediately;

  • no additional knowledge is needed, including any foreign languages (English, German);

  • Civil service in Turkey allows you to be a more desirable tenant to landlords;

  • 45 hours a week, no overtime;

  • Employees often have a career development plan.

That said, you'll still need certification and at least minimal language skills.

Key aspects of policing in the country

The police in Turkey is a civilian force subordinate directly to the Ministry of Interior. Its main task is to ensure law and order on the streets of the country. In the regions, it is subordinated to the governors, who also manage the gendarmerie (local army).

Police officers are obliged to be polite, to respond quickly to calls and requests for help from citizens, and to conduct preventive visits to schools and other general educational institutions. Their uniforms are dark blue uniforms with a cap of the same shade. They have only five chevrons, under each department.

Overview of the tasks and duties of police officers in Turkey

The main tasks of the Turkish police are:

  • Arrest criminals or suspects under the relevant laws;

  • crime prevention;

  • Identifying and investigating acts of wrongdoing;

  • ensuring peace and order on the streets of cities.

They also protect the political rights of citizens and safeguard the independence of the state.

The process of training and education of police officers

As the field involves a constant risk of harm to health, all police officers are required to have appropriate education. It is a bachelor's degree, postgraduate education, and training at one of the specialized universities. Without it, employment is impossible.

If you are a foreigner who has already studied at an institute in your home country, you can simply legalize your diploma. To do this, apply to the College of Higher Education or the local public education authority (if you have only completed secondary education or basic training). Sometimes you may need to attend a couple of additional classes to cover the missing hours, but usually you will simply be sent a notification that your education has been verified and legalized.

Salaries of police officers in Turkey

The average salary a police officer receives per year is about 17,877 liras in Turkish currency. If you translate it, you get about 835 euros or 70.5 thousand rubles. Depending on work experience, this amount increases - so an experienced officer receives about 20% more than one who just came to the station from the Academy.

Additional bonuses and compensation for police officers

In addition to your net pay for good service or when you are wounded on a mission, you will also be paid additional funds. The amount varies greatly from region to region and site funding.

Options and methods for finding vacancies and joining the police force

To get a job in the Turkish police, you will have to apply either directly to the department or, if you are graduating from the Academy already in the country, you will be helped by the state itself. Another way to find a vacant position is through bulletin boards, especially those of the state services, but the police post their vacancies there quite rarely.

Requirements for candidates and selection process

As this is a highly respected profession in Turkish society, the requirements are corresponding. In order to be at least considered, you must:

  • obtain a legalized foreign or Turkish diploma of education in the field of specialization;

  • to have a crystal-clear reputation, no major offenses;

  • be a driver's license holder (category B) or agree to take a driver's license course;

  • to gain citizenship;

  • be at least 26 years old;

  • to be interviewed at the precinct.

If, after your background check and oral interview, no violations or unsuitable character for employment are found, consider the job opening in your pocket.

Professional development and career prospects in the Turkish police force

This job has a career ladder, but you must have graduated from the police academy. If you have a diploma from the police academy, you can get higher positions: if you work hard enough, you can get into the officer ranks.
