History of Germany

Germany has a rich history, full of good and bad moments. As early as the first century AD, the Roman historian Tacitus described the Germanic tribes living in the area now known as Germany. The true fame of the Germans came only in the late 4th century when they began their invasions into the territory of the Roman Empire. In the 5th century, they established their own kingdoms on its land.

The Frankish Empire and the Birth of Germany

By the 9th century, the lands of Germany became part of the Frankish Empire. However, by 843, this empire had split into three kingdoms: West Frankia (future France), East Frankia (future Germany), and the Middle Kingdom, which later divided into Italy, Provence, and Lorraine. A symbolic date for the birth of Germany is considered to be February 2, 962, when the East Frankish King Otto I was crowned in Rome and became the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. By the 19th century, it included more than 350 political entities, making it one of the largest in Europe.

The Renaissance and the formation Germany

Germany during the Renaissance gifted the world with the invention of printing by Johannes Gutenberg and the Reformation, which challenged the authority of the Catholic Church. The clash between Protestants and Catholics led to the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, which evolved into a pan-European struggle against the hegemony of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty.

The collapse of the empire and modern Germany

The Holy Roman Empire lasted until 1806, before its existence was ended after the Napoleonic Wars. On its ruins, the Rhine Confederation existed from 1806 to 1813, which included some German states.

Today, Germany is a powerful European state, one of the leaders of the global economy, with a rich cultural heritage. There is much to see here for tourists, historians, and ordinary people who simply want to enjoy the beauty of this country. It emerged as a key player after World War II and today has a significant influence on the politics and economy of Europe, thanks to the hard work of its people and leaders.

Political system

Modern Germany is a parliamentary republic with two legislative bodies: the Bundestag, which is elected by universal suffrage for a four-year term, and the Bundesrat, which represents the federal states. The Bundesrat consists of representatives from the federal states, appointed by local governments. The president mainly performs representative functions, while the federal chancellor holds more power in the executive branch. The leading political parties in Germany include the Christian Democratic Union, the Social Democratic Party, the Christian Social Union, the Free Democratic Party, the Left Party, and the Alliance 90/The Greens.

Economy

Germany ranks among the leading countries in the world in terms of gross domestic product.
