2000 years bottling: a (Relatively) new white wine from Beresford Wines
After several millennia, Beresford Wines has finally released its new Emblem Fiano. Since the Lloyd family planted the first fiano grape tree in McLaren Vale 22 years ago, the region's unique climate has encouraged the creation of the wine's aromatic and intense flavors.
But fiano as a grape variety has its roots in the warmer coastal regions of Southern Italy, where it has probably been grown since Roman times. Now Beresford Wines has just unveiled its new Emblem Fiano, the first wine from the variety, and head winemaker Chris Dix said it's a testament to the amazing growth of fiano in the region. "I have to say that our Emblem Fiano is a reflection of the journey that our entire region has taken," Dix said. "А''bout the connection toRome, it's just incredible that we have such a strong connection to past civilizations. "
FianoFiano sits between semillon and viognier, and can be presented in two ways, depending on the winemaker: light and fresh or full-bodied and intense. Dix chose to emphasize the brightness of this varietal. "Fiano really shines in McLaren Vale, and our wine leans toward a light and juicy style with bright fruit notes such as apple and citrus," said Dix.
Cold weather conditions slowed the ripening of the grapes, which increased the pH levels and overall acidity that characterize the variety. The fruit was harvested in early April from Michael Petrucci's family vineyard in McLaren Vale, and to preserve freshness and'The juice was collected in the early morning hours to minimize oxidation. Gentle pressing was used to obtain free juice, after which the juice was sent to fermentation without contact with the skins. Slow and prolonged fermentation at temperatures below 20°C created floral notes and bright freshness, after which the wine was aged in a stainless steel tank on lees for three months.
"It has a nice, light to medium body and the acidity holds up incredibly well, so it's sure to be an enjoyable summer wine," said Dix. The Emblem Fiano wine is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as no animal proteins are used to refine it.

The wine's flavor description states that''The bouquet combines "aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle with the freshness of green apple, nashi pear and white peach", with notes of citrus, lemongrass and pineapple. The palate is dominated by "fresh citrus, nectarine and a touch of green apple on top," while "ginger and a pinch of white pepper in the background add complexity. "
Dix said that while the primary white varietal grown in McLaren Vale is chardonnay, winemakers use alternative white varieties such as fiano and vermentino to set their product apart from other regions and producers. "This can be especially important in a saturated wine market," he said, adding that it is also driven by market demand. "McLaren Vale, like many other wine regions around the world, benefits from providing a broad''Australia and a finalist for the Perfect Best Experience Award in the Absolute Best category. Beresford Wines will be showcasing the new Fiano wine during its Lavish Lawns series of events on selected Sundays before Christmas, as well as during sunset sessions on Fridays.
