Erdogan has been defeated again in Cyprus, but it's not enough.
21-year rule of Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey has been defeated again as a presidential candidate in northern Cyprus, but that hasn't stopped him. According to preliminary results, Erdogan won 52% of the vote and is eligible to assume the presidency in the divided country.
In northern Cyprus, however, he lost again to his opponent Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. According to unofficial results, Erdogan received 41.85 percent of the vote from 141 polling stations in northern Cyprus, while Kılıçdaroğlu received 59.21 percent. Over the past 10 years, Turkish voter turnout in northern Cyprus has increased from 12 percent to 59.21 percent, and with it came a decline in votes for Erdogan.
Compared to the first round, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's votes in northern Cyprus increased by 5.72 percentage points. Most of the votes that Sinan Ogan (3.66%) and Muharrem Ince (3.43%) had previously received went to Kılıçdaroğlu. Erdogan was able to increase his share of the vote by 2.44%.
In the last 10 years, Erdogan has lost gradually Turkish voters in northern Cyprus: he received 54.8% of the vote in 2014, 48.8% in 2018, 39.41% in 2023 and then 41.85% in 2023. At the same time, the number of voters who came to the elections gradually increased.

In the second round of elections on May 28, 2023, 141 polling stations were established in northern Cyprus, where 59.2% of Turkish voters went to the polls. Unofficial results show that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu received the most votes with 58.15 percent, while Erdoğan came second with 41.85 percent of the vote. In the past two elections, the following happened: in 2014, the turnout was 12% and Erdogan received 54.8% of the vote; in 2018, the turnout was 40% and the vote share for Erdogan was 48.8%. Over the past 9 years, the number of voters has increased by 47,940. In 2014, 92,171 Turkish citizens were registered and the number of voters in 2023 is 140,111.
