When will Donald Trump's trial take place?

Donald Trump's calendar is filled with court dates corresponding to his numerous criminal charges and civil lawsuits. The former president and his legal team are preparing for a busy year ahead, trying to manage multiple court dates while Mr. Trump continues his campaign for the presidency in 2024.

Criminal charges

Currently, Mr. Trump has faced criminal charges four times - two at the federal level and two at the state level. In addition, this list includes two civil lawsuits involving the former president in New York.

Civil court case in New York

The most pressing issue at the moment is Mr. Trump's civil lawsuit against the state of New York, which will begin in Manhattan court on Monday (October 2). In the civil suit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, Mr. Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, are accused of providing false or misleading asset valuations in financial statements. Judge Arthur Engoron will determine what penalties he will face for his fraudulent activities after it was established last week that Mr. Trump, his sons Donald Jr. and Eric, the companies, and executives inflated the value of their company's assets for many years.

Lawsuit against E. Jean Carroll

Mr. Trump will go to court against E. Jean Carroll again at the beginning of next year. This time, the case will only concern Ms. Carroll's allegations that Mr. Trump defamed her in 2019 after she accused him of rape. Judge Lewis Kaplan will preside over the case, which will take place in New York.

Federal criminal charges

This case pertains to four federal criminal charges brought against Mr. Trump regarding his alleged involvement in the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election and the subsequent insurrection on January 6. Mr. Trump is accused of conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction, and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, as well as conspiracy against rights. The former president has declared his innocence on all charges.

The case was initiated by Special Prosecutor Jack Smith following a years-long investigation into the Capitol attack, which was fueled by the former president's false claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. Judge Tanya Chutkan is presiding over the case in Washington.

Criminal case in the Manhattan Criminal Court

In April, Mr. Trump became the first sitting or former president to be criminally charged after being indicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in a Manhattan criminal court. The charges stem from an investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who claims that Mr. Trump attempted to cover up hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016 to silence her claims of an extramarital affair. At the hearing, Mr. Trump pleaded not guilty to all 34 charges. Judge Juan Merchan is presiding over the case in New York.

Federal criminal charges related to confidential documents

The former president was federally indicted for the second time in June, this time in connection with his alleged mishandling of confidential government documents that Mr. Trump took to his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida after leaving the White House in 2021. Mr. Trump was initially charged with 37 criminal counts, including violations of the Espionage Act for unlawfully retaining classified documents containing national security information. Three additional charges were added to the original indictment. Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all 40 charges in total.

Criminal case in Fulton County

Mr. Trump has been charged in Fulton County by District Attorney Fani Willis for his alleged involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, along with 18 co-defendants. The former president has been charged with violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, as well as 12 additional charges. Mr. Trump and his co-defendants have pleaded not guilty to all charges. A court date for Mr. Trump has not yet been set, but the case is being handled by Judge Scott McAfee.

Currently, two of Mr. Trump's co-defendants, Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell, have separated their trials from the other defendants. They will go to trial on October 23.
