Creative and enterprising Spain.
We are not in the best of times. Uncertainty is increasing, political waters are muddying, and the threat of a major international armed conflict is knocking on the door. These are not the most favorable circumstances.
Today, however, I want to draw attention to a little-noticed fact, a little-known initiative, entirely handmade, that recently gathered almost a thousand people in Nava Madrid. Today I will talk about #TRG23, better known as "Tarugo".
The idea was realized already eight years ago by David Bonilla. According to him, David, who feels "as much a programmer as an entrepreneur," currently works as director of Manfred, a tech hiring boutique he founded and sold to Sngular Group, where he also''holds the position of chief human resources officer. By his side is his wife Candela, a few Manfred volunteers and, most importantly, the community.
In the words of the organizers, "TRG is a design, development and marketing event for digital products and services that sprang up around La Bonilista's diverse community of subscribers, with the idea of creating the best tech conference in the world (or at least the most fun)." The community started as a group of programmers and software developers, small companies in the field, "startups" and little more. About a hundred people in total. Today there are about 750 people already, and among them there are people like me. Mostly those who have gotten infected.
The word 'community' doesn't fit well with the usual''s podcast, bringing together two nationally known technology podcasts: Heavy Mental and Mixx.io. On Friday, the main day, the room was filled to capacity. The performances this year, as the most experienced ones say, exceeded expectations. The quality is always high, always surprising and always presenting entrepreneurs, scientists, young people who are on the cutting edge and can teach a lesson.
Saturday is a day for families, children have their own time and activities. I was interested in a few things as an economist. Before the party on Friday, David Bonilla comes on stage and explains where the money comes from and what every euro was spent on. Almost 50% of the income comes from ticket sales and sponsors. If income exceeds expenses, a donation is made.
Numerous businesses have sprung up from the conversations that take place over the two days. A rock band, a party, stands, an octopus from Galicia, a small staff, accreditations and gifts for participants, food tents, games for children, image and sound.... Everything has been thought out to the last detail.
What does David Bonilla or the companies that come year after year get? Creating an entrepreneurial network, a way to connect people interested in the industry, both developers and marketers. But also''Generating activity, overcoming geographical constraints, thinking together and supporting each other. Several businesses have emerged from the conversations that take place on these two days.
One of the obvious conclusions that can be drawn from the past eight editions is that there is talent, there is creativity and there are entrepreneurs in Spain. There are people who make things that get up every morning to move forward, in this case in information technology. People who don't hesitate to apply their knowledge in the food industry, vineyards or anywhere else. They fail, they change, and they tell you about it, in case you could use it.
The thing that sets this community apart from other initiatives,''is that they go beyond orthodoxy and gather around an individualized proposal, open to experience. It's a question of attitude.
In Spain, there is talent, there is creativity and there are entrepreneurs. And this is what we forget when we observe the business world from an academic point of view or from the heights of big corporations. Companies are the people who make the decisions. And decisions are made better when you have examples around you to share and compare with.
There were no TV cameras, there were no big multinational companies. There was no showmanship. I know a lot of people have been left out but are already planning #TRG24. No one talked about government subsidies, politics, feminism or anything that doesn't involve showing interest in what makes
