Doesn't Sorrev Calamari look a little too much like a Spanish apartment complex?
Digital art is gaining popularity, especially the new South Korean dystopian drama series "Squid Game," which has exploded in popularity on Netflix. However, some attentive viewers have noticed an unusual similarity between the winding staircases in the series and a mansion in Spain that is famous for its unique postmodern design.
Talking about the design of the staircases in the Squid Game series
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk admitted that he was inspired by a print by the Dutch artist M.S. Escher's "Relativity." Escher's work, however, was presented in black and white, while the staircases in "Squid Game" stand out in bright colors. And it is here that some fans of the series have found commonality with the La Muralla Roja (Red Wall) mansion in Calpe, Spain, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill.
The La Muralla Roja complex
was built in 1968 and completed in 1973. The unique building is inspired by African kasbahs, which are characterized by interconnected public plazas and bridges. The exterior of the building is painted red, while the interior parts are painted in blue and purple colors.
Despite the distinct similarities, Bofill had a more utopian rather than dystopian vision in mind. La Muralla Roja's interior staircases lead to the solariums, residents' pool and provide magnificent views of the Balearic Islands. And best of all, you can stay in these apartments. The complex consists of 50 apartments ranging from studio to two-bedroom units, and some of them are available for rent on Airbnb for $110 per night.
This is a truly unique place that can be an inspiration for architecture lovers. If you're looking for more architectural masterpieces, check out our guide to famous buildings that can inspire creatives from all fields of art.
