If you've ever thought about a peaceful life and moving to the countryside, here's a great opportunity you shouldn't miss: you can currently buy an entire village in Spain for just 560,000 euros. The village of Salto de Castro covers an area of 6,000 square meters and includes 44 houses, a bar, a church, a school, and even a hotel, with the current population being zero. Let's take a closer look at what lies behind this unusual advertisement and which village it is referring to.

The history of the village

The village of Salto de Castro first appeared in announcements a year ago, and Spanish media reported that the entire village with 44 houses could be purchased for a sum slightly exceeding the cost of a large apartment in any European capital. It was bought for 300,000 euros by construction entrepreneur Oscar Torres from Toledo, who is now putting it back on the market for almost twice the price. Apparently, Mr. Torres acquired this village as an investment, invested certain funds, and improved the quality of the buildings, and is now ready to sell it for more money.

Condition and location

The village was built in 1940 to house workers constructing the nearby dam. When this large project was completed, people left in 1989, and the houses were left empty.

For over 30 years, they have not been used or inhabited, which indicates that they are not in the best condition. Salto de Castro is located in the province of Zamora, between the sparsely populated regions of Castile and León, near the Spanish-Portuguese border. It consists of 44 houses, a tavern, a church, a school, a swimming pool, a sports complex, and a former police station. In fact, it has everything you would expect from a standard Spanish village. The only thing it lacks is residents.

Empty villages in Spain

Empty villages are not uncommon in this rural part of Spain, as it is located far from the cities and the sunny coast of the country. Therefore, as foreign media report, the asking price is quite unrealistic. At the current price, the entire village costs as much as one large apartment or two smaller ones in Madrid or Barcelona. According to a previous study conducted by former owners, the investment needed to make the village operational and profitable would be around two million euros.
