The most expensive house for sale in the United States has just received a huge price cut, reports Mansion Global. Originally listed for $250 million in June of this year, the house, known as Casa Encantada, is now on the market for just $195 million. At this (still staggering) amount, it now shares the title of the most expensive property on the market with two other listings: a mansion in Malibu designed by renowned architect Robert Stern, and a penthouse on the top floor of a skyscraper in Manhattan overlooking Central Park.

“Such estates appear once every few decades, and once they are gone, they cannot be brought back,” said Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency, who is listing the property alongside Drew Fenton of Carolwood Estates, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

A spacious 40,000 square foot house was built during the Great Depression for Hilda Boldt Weber, a wealthy widow of a glass manufacturer from Ohio. Boldt Weber purchased the land for $100,000 - an impressive sum even today, and in 1934, it was truly an astounding amount of money during the greatest economic crisis of the modern industrialized world. She felt isolated among her late husband's peers, who reportedly looked down on her because of her humble origins, and decided to build a magnificent estate to solidify her position in California society.

The house, designed by James I. Dolena in a modern style with Georgian influences, overlooks the Country Club golf course in Bel Air. After the death of Boldt Weber, the property passed to various notable owners, including billionaire David Murdock of Dole Food and hotel magnate Conrad Hilton. Recently, there are Gary Winick, a financier, and his wife Karen Winick, an artist and writer, who stated to the Wall Street Journal in June that they are ready to downsize after more than 20 years of living in the house.

"For me, it's a work of art, and I have been its custodian," Gary said.

Before the listing, extensive renovations and restorations were carried out by Winick under the guidance of architect Peter Marino. The project took over two years, with 250 craftsmen present on-site daily to restore the plasterwork, update the lacquered walls, and polish 14 layers of paint. The luxurious estate features more than 60 rooms, including staff quarters and three dressing rooms with safes in the basement.

The price drop occurred after Gary's death last month. According to Mansion Global, he was very attached to this house and didn't want to sell it for less than $250 million. But now Karen is ready to push the sale forward, which has led to the price reduction. If the house had been sold at the initial price, it could have set another record: the most expensive home ever sold in the United States. Casa Encantada is well aware of this title, as it has held it twice - in 1980 and again in 2000. However, it seems that Ken Griffin, whose purchase of a Manhattan penthouse for $238 million in 2019 earned him this accolade, will remain the record holder for now.
