Serbia: Expo 2027 will be held in Belgrade - Oriental Journal.

The Specialized Exhibition (Expo) will be held in Serbia in the summer of 2027. The cultural event will be held in Belgrade and will be dedicated to the theme "A Game for Humanity: Sports and Music for All".

The Expo will be held in Serbia, more specifically in Belgrade, in 2027. The Expo is held every 5 years in odd-numbered years and has a narrower theme compared to the World Expo. The last specialized Expo was held this year from January to April in Buenos Aires under the theme "Science, Innovation, Art and Creativity for Human Development". During the voting, Serbia outperformed other candidate countries, including the United States, Argentina and Thailand, and always ranked first in the ranking. At the final vote, which'During the General Assembly of the International Bureau of Exhibitions (BIE) held in Paris, Belgrade beat Spain and Malaga in particular, with a score of 81 in favor and 70 against.

Theme of the event

The upcoming large-scale exhibition, which will take place in the Serbian capital from May 15 to August 15, 2027, will focus on the theme "Play for Humanity: Sports and Music for All". Through this international-scale event, the organizers want to showcase "potential scenarios and opportunities to create more sustainable individuals and communities." The organizers note that the choice of the city is based on the fact that Belgrade "has been a meeting place of different civilizations for centuries" and has best embraced the cultures that influenced it: the Ottoman and''Western European. The uncertainties associated with future change and new technologies will be explored in the exhibition through the lens of play.

Global issues, threats faced by humanity, as well as problems related to social distance and physical inactivity will be addressed. In analyzing the main theme, it will be divided into three subthemes: the power of play, sport and music. Play as creativity and innovation guided by fun; music as a tool for people's well-being and for conveying different and positive messages; and sport as training the body and mind to become more resilient. Among the key concepts announced on the official Expo 2027 website include improving mental and physical health, inspiring solidarity,''unity and inclusion between different cultures, as well as encouraging the creation of a new model of education and learning.

Political reactions

The news was greeted with great satisfaction by the entire political leadership in Belgrade, and shortly afterwards the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, expressed his joy: "Fantastic news and a great opportunity for the whole country." U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who supported his country's candidacy, acknowledged that the proposal submitted by Serbia to organize the International Expo 2027 was more convincing than that of the United States, and congratulated the Balkan country. This is certainly an important challenge and an opportunity for Serbia to prove its ability to organize''major international events. Overcoming corruption and abuse are the main obstacles that need to be overcome for a successful event, and key words such as solidarity, unity and multicultural inclusion must also find their place in everyday reality, where violence, misunderstanding and intolerance still too often reign supreme.
