A suburban resident of Milwaukee is asking for $75 million for a mansion in LA.
A luxurious estate called Ochos Manos has become available for purchase in Brentwood, built for the co-founder of the Milwaukee Brewers club in Los Angeles, for $75 million. The brokerage firm Carolwood Estates reports that the 3.5-acre estate includes a main house of approximately 20,000 square feet.
The owners of this luxurious property are financier Robert Bayer, who is also a member of the advisory board of the "Brewers" club, and his wife, Katherine Bayer. According to them, they purchased the majority of the land in Brentwood in 2000 when they were looking for a large, flat lot to build a home for themselves and their then-small children. At that time, the lot had a "beautiful but outdated ranch" built in the 1940s. After buying the land, the Bayers demolished the old house and donated parts of it to a museum. They then expanded their holdings by acquiring three neighboring lots, including one that was previously owned by the famous director Frank Capra, an Oscar winner.
Architect Bob Ray Offenhauser was hired to design eight bedrooms for the main house, which is built in a Mediterranean style with an abundance of stone details. One of the biggest challenges was finding authentic Mallorcan stone for the construction, as it could only be sourced from Spain. The couple found a general contractor responsible for renovations at the La Residencia hotel in Mallorca, Spain, and invited him to Los Angeles. He agreed to excavate his construction sites to provide them with the necessary stone. For about a year, he transported huge crates of stone to the U.S. "They looked like wooden bread boxes," said Beyer.
The construction of the estate took about three years after nearly two years of design work.
Beyer says that he and his wife spend time both in California and in Sun Valley, Idaho, as well as in the South of France. They are selling their estate because, according to them, they cannot fully utilize its potential with their adult children. "I believe that a big happy house with extensive grounds, like a fast car, deserves to be used often," he said. "Although the house is very comfortable even for the two of us, most of the time we can't fully enjoy it, especially the spacious grounds."
The property for sale is presented by Drew Fenton and son Beyer, Andrey Beyer, both from Carolwood Estates. Despite the decline in luxury transactions in Los Angeles, Andrey Beyer believes that the demand for unique properties remains. "There are no comparable flat lots on the Westside," he said. "Such a property will always have its own segment of specific demand."
