The condition under which the King’s Cup champion retains ownership of the trophy
The King's Cup is a competition with its own unique features. According to the prize-giving rules established by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), clubs can permanently own the trophy if they win it three times in a row or a total of five times. The same conditions apply to the trophy for the champions of La Liga. The winner of the Cup is also awarded 40 medals, which is a nice addition to the prize.
As of today, only five clubs have managed to win the Copa del Rey. The leader in terms of trophies is FC Barcelona, which has won this prize six times. They are followed by teams like Athletic Bilbao, which has claimed the trophy three times, and Real Madrid with two trophies.
Titles of other clubs
Athletic Bilbao, in turn, boasts 23 titles in the Copa del Rey, while Real Madrid has 20. The next positions in the list by the number of trophies won are:
- Atletico Madrid - 10 trophies
- Valencia - 8 cups
- Zaragoza - 6 cups
- Sevilla - 5 cups
- Espanyol and Real Unión - 4 cups each.
- Betis and Deportivo - 2 cups each.
- Arenas from Gecho and Real Mallorca - each has 1 cup.
FC Barcelona has earned the reputation of the king of cup tournaments, where only five teams can stand out for having original trophies in their collection. To keep the trophy, certain conditions must be met — three consecutive questions or five victories over different years. Sevilla also has two trophies on permanent rights: the first they received in 1939, and the second was awarded after the Spanish national team's triumph at the FIFA World Cup in 2010. These moments highlight the significance of the Copa del Rey in the history of Spanish football, as well as the competition that exists between the clubs.
