Golden visa in Spain

Since 2013, it has been possible to obtain a residence permit as an investor or the so-called Golden Visa in Spain. This residence permit was introduced into our legislation through the well-known Innovators Act. Since then, foreign and non-EU citizens can obtain this residence permit in Spain if they make any of the following investments in our country:

  • Investments in financial assets: government debt (2 million euros)
  • Shares or equity in Spanish companies (1 million euros)
  • Investments in investment funds, closed-end investment funds, or venture capital funds established in Spain (1 million euros)
  • Bank deposits in Spanish financial institutions (1 million euros)
  • Investment in real estate (500,000 euros)
  • Investments in a business project in Spain

The government of last year estimated that by now, just under 5,000 such permits had been issued, of which 45% were granted to citizens of Chinese nationality.

It should be noted that the permission to acquire real estate was introduced in 2013, after the economic crisis and during a specific period in Spain when there was a need to attract foreign investments and property purchases.

Citizens of the country and foreigners can obtain this permit if they make investments in Spain, such as acquiring assets or investing in real estate. To date, around 5,000 permits have been issued, with 45% going to Chinese citizens. Many believe that this permit stimulates speculation in the housing market and displaces local residents. As a result, there has been an idea to abolish this permit or to raise the minimum amount required for purchasing property in Spain. It is important to note that obtaining this permit does not provide direct access to Spanish citizenship.
