After the waters were covered with silt, Kaunos lost its socio-economic importance. Its population began to decline, so the town soon fell into disrepair. In 1392 Kaunos fell under the rule of Sultan Bayezid, who transformed it into a part of the Ottoman Empire.

The town of Dalyan itself became popular only a few decades ago, when a unique beach with dozens of eggs laid by sea turtles of the rarest species, Caretta, was spotted nearby. Before that, it was just a pond adapted for fishing. At the end of the 90s, the largest hotel complexes and entertainment facilities continued to be built here, which transformed Dalyan into one of the famous river resorts in Turkey.
